Matteu SeWyn= the planner. he's a tirnanog cridhos with a massive sugar addiction problem.
Soloni = the grifter. is ms-not-appearing-in-this-fic. maybe next time. ;)
Ever Turi = the hitter. tirnanog merc.
Xandre Aten=the hacker. avalon rianic auger/mage
Rose Petora = the thief. norther war orphan with a slight doormage ability; not gifted enough to have quite as many of the problems that go along with, or conversely, to get ceannard trap's attention.

still getting used to them, but i think they'll be fun.

Nothing drew mages into a room like the smell of food cooking, nil hea.

"Mmm. Smells good. C'se ta?" Aten asked hopefully as he came into the kitchen, gestured a chair over, turned it backwards and poured into it in smooth stages, most of his body easing into the seat, followed by arms and legs coming to rest, hands and feet going still, and his head resting comfortably on the back of his forearm, watching.

"Doing what I said I was gonna do, tá?" was Ever's gruff response, as started scooping up spoonfuls of dough and dropping them onto the baking slate one by one.

Aten leaned in closer, over the back of the chair, somewhat wide-eyed. "...How much did you put in?"

Ever nodded towards the midden-basket, and Aten looked over at the empty paper packages there and blinked. Then he looked back at Ever, a bit warily. "Don't go tasting your own cooking too much, nil hea?"

"You questioning my self-control?" Ever asked, as put the handle to the baking slate and then slid it into the oven, released it, then used the handle to take up the finished one, glowing slightly red around the edges. He pulled it out and set it down on the table to cool--where, despite all warning, Aten eyed the steaming cookies with their crumbly brown edges thoughtfully.

"I wouldn't, if I were you, tá?" Ever warned.

"I was only looking. Eyes aren't allowed to see? Lords of light, man." There was a pause and then Aten asked, "Can I convince you to make some Faerie-legal ones later?"

Ever merely smiled a little.

"Ah, I see you Ever. What's your price?"

Their bartering was interrupted before he had a chance to begin.

"Salve--C'se ta?"

"'Ello, Rose." Ever said, "I'm baking for the cridhos."

"Tá, we're not even to look at them, or he'll break our heads." Aten added.

"I didn't even say I wanted any." Rose bristled defensively. "I was just asking."

Ever rolled his eyes at them both, and kept going through the motions of cookie-making.

"Why are you making cookies for the boss?" Rose asked. "I thought you didn't like the boss and you were just here for the pay. Is this one of those Tirnanog lies? Are you secretly making them for us and just saying that they're for the boss?"

"Nil hea--look, why don't you guys get of my kitchen, tá?" Ever growled.

"It's not your kitchen, actually," Aten began, "it's--"

"It's not? Are you laying claim to this kitchen? 'Cause if you are--I'll put this spoon down, we can go outside, and I'll fight you for it." Ever offered.

"Se maith! We're getting out of your kitchen--Come on, Rose." Aten said, rising from his seat and giving Rose a nudge.

They'd just gone through the door when Ever, being able to count, suddenly grinned and called after them. "Let me know how it tastes, tá?"

A beat later, Rose came right back into the kitchen, looking mildly distressed. She took Ever's wrist, raised his hand and laid the rest of the cookie in it. Then she spat the mouthful she was holding into her hand and offered him that as well. "Too sweet." She said. "They're terrible. My teeth are screaming. My tongue is numb."

Ever chuckled and gestured directions over his shoulder. "The midden is there. Water and wine are there."

"I tried to tell her." Said Aten solemnly from the doorway, and then he blinked and straightened up. "Cridhos a' seogh."

"My thanks, Aten." Ever quickly slid the first tray into a cloth-lined clay basket, Aten took his seat back, and Rose immediately began an in depth examination of a selection of kitchen knives.

"Salve. C'se ta?" SeWyn asked as he came in; he looked somewhat better than he had last night, at least to Ever's initial quick, sideways examination, but it was also plain to him that it was mostly projection, an act of will making it so. The cridhos was still much rougher around the edges, rumpled, cracked-sharp, and edgy-tired than was right.

"Salve!" Rose and Aten chorused, innocent as the morning dew, and Ever wanted to smack them over their heads with one of his baking slates.

"I like cooking, everyone else likes eating, I figured some cookies would brighten everyone up, tá? Here. Try this, M'lord." Ever said, and a baked treat was laid in SeWyn's hands, because it was harder not to take something that was being handed to you. He could almost feel the other two holding their breath, when their boss took a bite, and he really wished they'd stop it, or find somewhere else to be, because if he could feel it then surely SeWyn could, tá?

Apparently the boss was feeling the weight and the bite of need a bit too strongly to care about what a thief and a mage might find to be tense about. His expression was two clicks of pure bliss, and then it was gone, so fast it might've been imagination--might've been missed entirely except that Ever knew.

"These are damned good, Turi. Perfect."

And even though it was all a game, Ever couldn't help but feel the warmth anyway. He bowed slightly, to hide it.

"May I?" SeWyn was asking.

"Oh, tá, take the whole thing, M'lord, I've got more in the oven."

"My eternal thanks and blessings on you and all your future spawn." SeWyn mumbled through a mouthful of cookie, making the appropriate Rianic gesture. "Gods, these are good." He moved off, taking the clay basket with him, and everyone looked at each other.

"So our boss likes your death cookies, se maith a tiu. Can you make some good cookies now?" Rose asked.

"Speaking of death-by-baked-goods, Soloni will probably want to see you dead for this." Aten warned.

"What of it? Soloni will only say words. Him, though," Ever jerked his head in the direction the boss had just left in. "He just might get us all dead, if we don't make sure he gets at least some of what he needs when he needs it, tá?"
